CMLT-34-English: Virtual Kidnapping

Virtual kidnappings occur where a criminal contacts a family member or employer demanding an immediate ransom payment for an individual who has not in fact been kidnapped, but may be travelling, attending a meeting or social event, or is operating in an area with limited to no internet or cell phone coverage. The criminal, knowing that attempts to contact the individual will fail, threatens the wellbeing of the “victim” for an easy to pay amount. Often these events only last for several hours and payments are made before the alleged victim is able to confirm that they have not in fact been kidnapped.
